Overview

A visitor decides in about five seconds whether to stay on your site or leave. Here is a quick test you can run on your own homepage right now.

Try something with me. Pull up your own website on your phone right now and give it five seconds. In that time, can a total stranger tell what you do, where you do it, and what to do next?

Be honest. Most local business sites can't. They open with a nice photo and a line like quality you can trust, and the visitor just sits there thinking, okay, but do you even do what I need, and are you near me?

Here's why five seconds is the whole game. Your website is where everything else lands. Every ad you run, every search, every referral from a neighbor, they all end up there. And a visitor decides almost instantly whether to stay or hit back. If your site doesn't answer their question fast, all the effort and money you spent getting them there just evaporates. And nearly all of them are on a phone, so a layout that only works on a big screen is quietly costing you.

So here's the fix, and it's the top of your page, the part people see before they scroll. Four things have to be right there. What you do and where, in plain words. "Drain cleaning and plumbing repair in the East Metro" beats any slogan. A reason to trust you, immediately, years in business, licensed, family run, your rating. One clear action, not five buttons fighting for attention, just one, call or request service. And on a phone, a tap-to-call button that's always right there, because someone with a burst pipe is not going to scroll around hunting for your number.

That's it. Clear, trustworthy, one obvious step. You don't need a bigger website. You need the first screen to do its job.

So go run the test. Five seconds, your phone, the eyes of a stranger. If it can't pass, that's not a small thing. That's the leak everything else is draining into.
